Maths

Maths may not teach us to add love or subtract hate but it gives us every reason to hope that every problem has a solution!

Mathematics is a creative and highly interconnected discipline that has been developed over centuries, providing the solution to some of history’s most intriguing problems. It is essential to everyday life, critical to science, technology and engineering, and necessary for financial literacy and most forms of employment. A high-quality mathematics education therefore provides a foundation for understanding the world, the ability to reason mathematically, an appreciation of the beauty and power of mathematics, and a sense of enjoyment and curiosity about the subject.

National Curriculum 2014

Our Vision

To provide an enabling environment where maths is highly valued, actively promoted and enjoyed by all. Teachers plan and deliver lessons that support and challenge all children as they master mathematical techniques, methods and strategies. Through a rich and purposeful curriculum, aimed to inspire and engage, all children who leave St Peter’s in year 6 are confident mathematical thinkers, reasoners and problem solvers.

Maths Mastery

At St Peter’s C. of E. School we believe that every child has the potential to succeed, having access to the same curriculum content as their peers, and acquiring a deep, long term, secure and adaptable understanding of the subject.

Teachers are currently being trained on how to use Complete Maths as a system for planning, resources come from here, and are also created by teachers. Whilst we are being trained we continue to use some resources from White Rose Maths.

Concrete – Children should have the opportunity to use concrete objects and manipulatives to help them understand what they are doing.

Pictorial – children should build on this concrete approach by using pictorial representations. These representations can then be used to reason and problem solve.

Abstract – with the foundations firmly laid, children should be able to move on to an abstract approach using numbers and key concepts with confidence.

Language - understanding the vocabulary embedded in the Maths curriculum is crucial for the children and vocabulary is taught discretely within lessons.

Reasoning and problem solving is encompassed in the above approaches to deepen and master all aspects of mathematics.

Part of the Complete Maths offer is 'Tutor' which allows children to access booster lessons at a diagnostically secure level - within these sessions there are videos which the children can refer to. We use this in class and for homework.
